This is simply an invitation to join a ship getting ready to play a game

this is just a recreational suggestion, nothing else.
>From the Captain -- AN INVITATION TO JOIN MY STARSHIP -- THE KOTUKU
**Last chance to join the KOTUKU before we engage the Drej!!!**
Greetings!
I extend this invitation to you to join my starship KOTUKU, which is one
of 37,000 ships created at www.afterearth.com, in association
with a new animated sci-fi film called "Titan AE", which will be out in
theatres in the US on June 16th and shortly thereafter in the rest of
the world.
In the movie, the Earth is destroyed by the evil Drej and the hero must
find a special starship, the Titan, which holds the salvation of
mankind.
To promote the movie, Fox created a contest in which people built
starships, then recruited as many people as they could to them, and now
are gearing up for a last simulated space combat with the Drej. The
ship that kills the most Drej will receive "cool prizes" (we're not
talking t-shirts here) from Fox and EVERY PERSON REGISTERED FOR THE SHIP
WHO PARTICIPATES WILL WIN THE PRIZE. It is my hope to force Fox to send
those prizes all over the world, as the KOTUKU now has people on it from
more than 20 different countries.
The Kotuku is in a very good place in this contest. Although we are
currently in 18th place with close to 600 people registered for the
ship, the number of registrants for a ship won't matter at all in the
contest. What will matter is how many active people we have shooting
the Drej and how many Drej we collectively destroy. After watching the
messageboards of the ships ahead of us in the race, and after talking to
their captains, it looks like all they have left are a few dozen
players. In contrast, the KOTUKU has a good 220 actively playing people
at this time as well as another 100 or so who were kind enough to leave
their e-mail addresses with me so that I could call them up for active
service when needed. For this reason, I am confident that we might very
well win this thing....
But every extra person addded at this time can help!
In addition to the contest, though, there is much more going on... you
see, we took the basic premise of the movie and developed a whole
fantasy world with it. We are building the starship, organizing it,
getting it ready for take-off on June 14th and so forth... it is
providing us with a rich laboratory to think about things that matter as
well as giving us a good time pretending that we are on a starship...
too much to tell you here...and we are just getting started!
-------------------------------------
Instructions For Joining The KOTUKU
-------------------------------------
(1) Before doing anything else, go to:
www.macromedia.com/shockw...Shockwave\
Flash
and download the newest versions of the Flash players. You will need
this stuff anyway for your web browsing so go get it now. There is also
a testing system there to check out your players. The software is
free. Afterearth won't work if you don't have it.
(2) Then go to:
www.afterearth.com/
NOTE: The server at this site is often overloaded due to its
popularity. You may get in first time you try, but more often than not,
it will try your patience either at the front door or any place in the
process of signing up. Waiting does help but sometimes you have to give
up and try again at another time... try to hang in there and keep
trying...
(3) Click on "Join Afterearth"
(4) Click on "New User".
(5) Type in your choice of login name and password and then type in a
valid e-mail address. Write down what you wrote here:
login: _____________
Password: _____________
e-mail:_____________
(6) When it goes through, you will now see a screen that shows the
rules of the game. Click on "continue", read the rest, and then click
on "JOIN A SHIP".
NOTE: If the server hangs before you get this screen, chances are high
that the login part of your registration was completed. If waiting
doesn't work to get you past the hang, you will need to come in again,
this time through typing in your login and password at the front door.
The first time you try this, though, you will be brought through the
e-mail validity check process that I will describe below under (15)
"Registration Cleansing". Then you can continue with the "Join a ship"
process...
(7) After clicking on "Join a Ship", you will see a search form. In the
ship section, type in "KOTUKU". Make sure you spell it correctly. In a
few minutes, you will then see the KOTUKU listed with "Psychee" as the
captain. Click on the name of the ship and soon, a picture of our
vessel will show.
(Image"> Under the ship you will see a rainbow graph of our resources. Write
down the numbers:
Shields:__________
Habitat:__________
Arsenal:__________
Engine: __________
Food: __________
(9) Now click on "Join This Ship".
(10) You get to bring to the ship THREE items that you either can't live
without yourself or else want to add to our ship stores. We already
have acquired all the medications and weapons that we need and a whole
lot more. Feel free to use your imagination. This part is just for
fun.
(11) You also get to bring 10 points with you to distribute. We are
trying to keep all the resources equal, so look at the numbers that you
wrote up above and put your 10 points in the places that are the
lowest. Now click on "Submit" and you will see the ship in large
format.
(12) There are two buttons on the next screen. The first is "Ship
Store" -- you can see all the things that people put into the store by
scrolling through this. The second is "Message Board". This button
will bring you to our ship's welcome center.
When you get there, scroll down to my BLUE welcome message. It will
give you further instructions about contacting me so that you can get to
our headquarters offsite in our Yahoo! club and other places...
LEAVE A MESSAGE -- Leave a message for me on the board, telling me that
you just joined up. Use your afterearth login name and e-mail address.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Registering with Me
-----------------------------------------------------------
(13) When you have completed all that, e-mail me at
capt_psychee@.... Afterearth does NOT tell me who signed up for
my ship so this is very important.
Tell me --
(a) Your afterearth login name
(b) The name of the person who sent you this letter (Garfeimao)
(c) your preferred e-mail address
(14) Also send Mutley, our Quartermaster, an e-mail telling him what
three items you brought to the ship. He has been trying to keep track
of them, as they don't always show up on the screen when we check...
you can reach him at mutley100m@...
-------------------------------------
Registration "Cleansing"
-------------------------------------
(15) The first time that you use your login at afterearth, you will be
brought through a procedure to validate your e-mail address. What will
happen is this -- you will login normally, but instead of getting in to
the site, a screen will pop-up asking you to insert your login,
password, and e-mail address. It will then tell you to check your
mail.
(a) You will then receive a message in your e-mail box. It should
arrive within minutes, but if the server is bogged down, it might take
longer.
(b) The message you receive will have a link for you to click on. That
link will tell the afterearth server that you replied to the message.
It will return a screen saying "Welcome back to afterearth" and after
that your login will be good for playing the game when it comes. (Why
the message says what it does is a LONG story... )
-----------------------------------
PLAYING THE GAME
----------------------------------
I am writing this before we have even seen the game at Afterearth.com.
I expect that it will be loaded to the site in the first week of June.
I don't know what will be required of the players. All I am told is
that it will involve piloting a ship in space and fighting the Drej.
I have been told that there will be a short period in which we can
practice (maybe a week) and that after that, the contest between the
ships will start. The contest will not last long -- maybe only a week.
If you are good at video games, this is a chance to earn a prize with
your skills. If you are NOT good at videogames, you can have a friend
play for you, or arrange to have one of us do the final shooting for
you.
After the contest is over, which I believe will be about June 16th, this
afterearth site will close. However, the KOTUKU will still be living on
playing our own version of the game as I briefly described above. In
addition, we will be playing with other ships in games that we are only
now developing in the Intra-Fleet Alliance.
Once I get an e-mail address for you, you will receive an invitation to
our Yahoo! club headquarters, where people are busily building up the
ship, organizing the newly planned website, signing up for jobs, getting
ready to fight the Drej, and in general, getting into the fantasy of
what it would take to re-colonize elsewhere after the world is destroyed
by them. We have a message board and a live, voice-enabled chat room
there. Our club was just listed as the 6th most popular Science Fiction
and Fantasy club in the Yahoo! network (apart from Startrek and Star
Wars sites) and we might even be higher in the ranks by the time you get
there!
You can choose to just play the Drej fighting game or to do that plus
the larger fantasy game. The choice is up to you. I doubt that prizes
will be awarded to people who do not actively engage the Drej, though.
Thanks in advance for your support.
Hope to see you soon!
Captain Psychee,
Starship KOTUKU
Chairperson, Intra-Fleet Alliance Of Titan Starship Captains
(otherwise known as General Psychee -SG-12 at the SGC)
